What is “Integrated Business Planning” (IBP)? It is a type of procedure that is used to synchronize plans, whether commercial, financial or even also of the supply chain, forming a single administrative process to meet certain requirements of more modern supply chains.


What is “Sales and Operations Planning” (S&OP)? They are tools that serve to improve the supply chain by studying its demand while relating the results to the objectives of all areas: sales and marketing, design, operations and finance.


What are the similarities between IBP and S&OP? Mention and describe them.

  • They make decisions and collect data for proper functioning in a supply chain.

  • They create a demand-driven profitable supply response.

What are the differences between IBP and S&OP? Mention and describe them.

  • Integration of strategic plans, initiatives and activities: The way data is collected to develop different strategic plans has the greatest impact on IBP systems.

  • Product and portfolio review integration.

  • Integration of financial planning.


How does the IBP process work? Describe in detail. It is managed as a process carried out monthly, devising operations plans for the company.It has an environment of changes and increasing complexity, which analyzes the cause of the impacts on the results, aligns the different functional areas to shared metrics and performs analysis of future scenarios to determine what is the optimal business action plan, taking into account external impacts on demand, not just internal ones. It offers greater visibility to supply restrictions, allowing the company greater responsiveness, which has 5 key points:

  • Demand Review.

  • Portfolio Management Review.

  • Management Business Review.

  • Integrated Reconciliation.

  • Supply Review.


What are the challenges of IBP? For me it could be that as they use too much technology they could possibly have security risks, such as piracy or also hackers who can steal confidential information. Even losing control in software and in general technical problems that are not human errors but technological mistakes.


Which are the most common difficulties/problems when implementing IBP? Mention them and provide examples.

  • Not having a stable internet.

  • Technological problems.

  • Assign processes to people who are not capable.

  • Lack of coordination and communication.


What are the advantages and disadvantages of IBP?

-Advantages: 

  • Orderly and purposeful activities.

  • It points out the need for future changes.

  • Provides a basis for control.

  • Direct attention to objectives.

-Disadvantages:

  • It is limited by the low precision of the information and by the

  • uncertainty of future events.

  • Planning can stifle initiative.

  • It may delay actions in some cases.


What is the importance of IBP nowadays?

From my point of view, companies that use this tool realize that in addition to improving the supply chain planning process, it improves the way they manage the business and helps them be more profitable. This allows them to emphasize to create higher quality products or services due to the importance of the efficiency of their supplies and how they work and develop them to be increasingly competitive within their respective markets.
